If purpose is why you live, values are how you want to live. Core values are the qualities you most want to embody and protect, such as honesty, freedom, family, growth or creativity. They are the compass you use when there’s no rulebook.
Values are not goals
A goal can be completed. A value can’t. “Get fit” is a goal; health or vitality is a value. You can tick off the goal and still need the value tomorrow. Because values never run out, they make a much steadier guide than any single target.
Real values vs. “shoulds”
Many of the values we claim aren’t really ours. We absorbed them from parents, religion, school, culture, employers or social media. Some of these inherited values fit us well. Others quietly cause friction, because we’re living by a rule we never chose.
A few signs that a value might be a “should”:
- You feel guilt rather than energy when you think about it.
- You’d describe it using someone else’s words (“My dad always said…”).
- You honour it mostly when someone’s watching.
- Living it leaves you resentful rather than fulfilled.
None of this means you must discard inherited values. It means you get to examine them and decide which ones you want to keep on purpose.
Why values make decisions easier
When you’re clear on your values, many decisions become simpler. If family and health are at the top of your list, a promotion that requires 70-hour weeks and constant travel isn’t just a career question; it’s a values question. Clarity won’t make every choice painless, but it shows you what you’re really trading.
Values also explain a lot of everyday frustration. When you feel irritated, drained or “off” for no obvious reason, check whether one of your values is being stepped on. Often it is.
Try this: the values sort
- Read through the list of values in your workbook (or brainstorm your own). Mark every value that feels important to you.
- For each one you marked, ask: Is this mine, or a “should”? Put a small S next to any that feel inherited and unexamined.
- Keep the full list. In the next lesson, you’ll narrow it down to your top five.
