Module 2: Core Success Skills

Lesson 2.3: Learning Any Skill Faster

Deliberate practice: A specific target; Just beyond comfort; Fast feedback; Repeat and adjust.

The ability to learn new skills is one of the most valuable success skills of all, because it multiplies every other one. Careers change, technology changes and goals change. People who learn well can adapt.

Deliberate practice

Not all practice is equal. Repeating what you already do comfortably keeps you at the same level. Deliberate practice has four features:

  1. A specific target. Not “get better at presenting” but “open with a clear one-sentence point”.
  2. Just beyond your comfort zone. Hard enough to stretch you, not so hard you give up.
  3. Fast feedback. You find out quickly what worked and what didn’t.
  4. Repetition with adjustment. You try again, changing one thing at a time.

Break skills into parts

Most skills are made of smaller sub-skills. Public speaking includes structuring a message, opening, using examples, managing nerves and handling questions. Pick the sub-skill that would make the biggest difference and practise that first.

Learn by doing, then study

Reading about a skill feels productive, but most learning happens when you try. A useful rhythm: try, notice, study, try again. Attempt the skill, notice where you struggled, look up how others handle that specific problem, then try again.

Make learning stick

  • Space it out. Short, regular sessions beat one long session.
  • Test yourself. Recalling something from memory strengthens it more than re-reading.
  • Teach it. Explaining a skill to someone else shows you what you don’t yet understand.
  • Find a model. Study someone a few steps ahead of you and notice what they do differently.

Try this: your 30-day skill sprint

Choose one skill that would help you reach your main aim. Break it into sub-skills and pick one to start with. Plan short practice sessions (15 to 30 minutes, three or four times a week), decide how you’ll get feedback and set a date to check your progress.
