Module 1: The Principles of Success

Lesson 1.3: Clarity: Know What You Want and Why

Getting clear on what you want: What exactly?; By when?; How will I know?; Why it matters.

It’s hard to hit a target you can’t see. Vague wishes such as “I want to do better” or “I want more” don’t give your brain anything to work toward. Clarity turns a wish into a direction.

From vague to clear

A clear aim answers three questions:

  1. What exactly? “Get fitter” becomes “walk 30 minutes, five days a week, and complete a 10k by spring.”
  2. By when? A time frame creates urgency and lets you plan backwards.
  3. How will I know? A visible sign that you’ve arrived or that you’re on track.

Why your “why” matters

Clarity about what gets you started. Clarity about why keeps you going when it gets hard. Your reason should connect to your definition of success from Lesson 1.1. Ask “why does that matter?” several times until you hit something that genuinely moves you. “Earn more” might lead to “so I’m not anxious about bills”, then to “so I can be present with my family”. That deeper reason is what you’ll remember on difficult days.

Fewer, clearer aims

Trying to change everything at once usually means nothing changes much. Choose one main aim for the next 90 days and, at most, two supporting ones. Everything else goes on a “later” list. Saying “not now” to good ideas is part of clarity.

Picture the path, not just the destination

Research on mental contrasting suggests that imagining the outcome and the obstacles works better than positive daydreaming alone. Picture the result you want, then picture the most likely obstacle, then decide what you’ll do when it appears: “If I’m tired after work, then I’ll walk for just ten minutes.”

Try this: your clarity statement

Write your main aim for the next 90 days using the three questions above. Then write your “why” by asking “why does that matter?” at least three times. Finally, name the most likely obstacle and write one if-then plan for it.
